Barbarians

The Barbarians (Varvari) were founded in 1987, while the first gatherings and singing at the stadium under Gorica started much earlier, almost a decade before the actual cheerleading. In april of 1987 our team hosted Rijeka and Armada and is considered to be the first organized fan cheering record in Podgorica. Since then, the history of the “barbarians”, the largest cheerleading group in Montenegro and one of the most respectable in the territory of ex-Yu republics – imbued with everything that makes the life of ultras – the ups, downs, choreographies.

From its foundings to the present, the social and even geographical map of the Balkans has changed several times, which has had an effect on the size of the fan group, and once even resulted in its disruption. Initially, the number was up to 500 people. At that time, the urban spirit in Titograd was developing, hardly accepting the trends of the West, and especially upside down looking at Ultras culture and everything that this group of fans brings with them. “Savages”, “Fools” will soon become the symbol of the city, pioneers of resistance to provincialism and guardians of Podgoricas’ universe. The “barbarians” soon became a homogeneous and powerful group. They did not tolerate one leader because, as they said to “Tifu”: “We see no reason that in our group there has to be someone who would be worshiped”.

The first amateur banners, the first torches, hosting and the big rise marked the first five years. The current team of barbarians re-established the group in June 1994 on the match with “Vojvodina”. The nineties and the beginning of the 21st century are imbued with the dissolution of the two countries and the Montenegrin independence, so that the group wandered through the three leagues, more working in the organization and numbers of fans, props and flags.

About our group of fans, only figures speak. No guest appearances in the Serbian-Montenegrin joint league have been missed or allowed that our club does not have support. Visits were from 100 to 300 people our fans, while the number of fans at home was never below 400 people. The matches with the Belgrade “twins” are for remembering – they involved up to 2,500 of our fans.

“Meraklija Niš” confirmed the brotherhood with our fan group, which dates back to the era of whole Yugoslavia.

The “Barbarians” continued their constant rise and struggle despite the poignant story of ultras in Montenegro, as well as the many problems they encountered. Definitely, they have become and will be our twelfth player. Someone who is always with the club, regardless the club is first or second on the table, someone without whose presence in the stadium, matches, makes no sense.
